Bradley University, located in Peoria, IL, traces its origins back in 1897, when the philanthropist Lydia Moss Bradley founded the Bradley Polytechnic Institute, in memory of her husband Tobias and their 6 children, all of whom died suddenly.
Due to the fact that there was only one other high school in the city, Bradley was originally organized as a combination of a 2-year college and a 4-year academy. BU rapidly expanded, and by 1899 it was ready to accommodate nearly 500 pupils, offering them study fields that included chemistry, biology, German, English, French, mathematics, history and physics, as well as several other educational programs. The 4 - year collegial program was adopted in 1920 and in the coming decades, the student enrollment continued to grow. The name of Bradley University was adopted in 1946, remaining the same today.
BU was highly ranked by U.S. News & World Report, placing it on the 6th place, among `Midwestern comprehensive masters-degree-granting universities`, as well as by Forbes and The Princeton Review magazines, being names 24th on the list of `Top 25 Most Entrepreneurial Campuses` and `Top 25 Most Connected Campuses`.
The university is divided into several undergraduate and graduate colleges and schools. The undergraduate schools offered at BU are: the College of Education and Health Sciences, College of Engineering and Technology, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Foster College of Business Administration, Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts and Academic Exploration Program (AEP).
Bradley University has an enrolment of approximately 6000 students, offering Masters level graduate degrees, through its Graduate Schools, in 5 departments, including communication and fine arts, business, engineering, education and health sciences and liberal arts and sciences.
The university's athletic teams are known as the Bradley Braves, competing in the Missouri Valley Conference, in Conference-approved sports that include basketball, baseball, soccer, golf, cross country and tennis, as well as volleyball and softball. BU does not have a football team, due to the fact that the football program was canceled in 1970.
